The teenage years are hard aren’t they? You’re coming up to the stage where you feel old enough that you don’t need adults telling you what to do, and yet you don’t really have enough experience in anything to guide you. It’s all equally exciting and daunting.

I didn’t really enjoy my teenage years. I had a lot of things going on in my personal life, and my depression started to develop. When I went to the doctors they just saw a typical overwhelmed teenager who was feeling upset about stuff, and that just made things even worse. I didn’t feel able to open up to anyone, and I felt pretty alone.

I loved spending time in Steyne Gardens with my friends

That being said, I do have some fantastic memories from that period! Meeting at the bandstand in town, and sitting on the Guildbourne Centre steps chatting for hours about nothing in particular. Playing Twister in Steyne Gardens. Being able to go into Brighton without adult supervision was a big and exciting thing too! And of course getting my first phone…Nokia 3310.

As bad as it got at points, there is nothing that I would actually change about my teenage years. Those experiences helped to shape me into the person I am today, and I am pretty happy with that person. There are, however, some things I would tell myself:

  1. It’s okay to be sad. It’s not a sign of weakness

  2. Medication is not the root of all evil – it can actually help you one hell of a lot

  3. Get out of your comfort zone – have more experiences

  4. The relationships you forge now might not last forever, and that’s ok

  5. Talk to your friends more. Open up to them about what’s going on and how you feel

  6. Don’t let people walk all over you, and don’t get pressured into doing something you don’t want to do

  7. Don’t be scared of the boys you fancy – you have loads of friends who are boys, why would these be any different?!

  8. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

  9. Dream big. You have so much potential. Don’t waste it

  10. Have fun! Let loose and enjoy yourself

Is there anything you’d change during your teenage years? What would you like to go back and tell yourself?
